Prater’s Insulators serves Chipley and Washington County from our Panama City home base, about 38 miles south on Highway 77. Brian makes the drive to Chipley for estimates and jobs regularly. No sales reps. No subcontractors. Brian handles every estimate himself.
Inland Panhandle, Full Summers
Chipley sits at about 98 feet elevation, higher and drier than the coast, but the summers are just as brutal. Without the Gulf breeze, inland Panhandle heat stacks up fast. A July afternoon in Chipley will push an under-insulated attic past 140 degrees, and that heat drives straight down through the ceiling into your living space. If your AC runs constantly from May to October and the house still feels warm upstairs or in back bedrooms, the attic insulation is the first thing to look at.
Older Homes on Older Insulation
A lot of Chipley’s housing stock dates back to the mid-20th century and earlier. Homes built in the 1950s through 1980s typically have thin fiberglass batts in the walls and minimal blown-in or nothing at all in the attic. Insulation that was installed 40 or 50 years ago has settled, compressed, and lost R-value even if it has never been touched by a storm. Bringing an older Chipley attic from R-11 or R-13 up to R-38 or R-49 with blown-in fiberglass is usually a half-day job, and most projects fall in the $2,000 to $4,000 range. Full pricing breakdown here.
Hurricane Michael Hit Here Too
People forget that Michael’s damage extended well beyond the coast. Washington County took serious wind and tree damage. Church windows blew out, roofs came off, trees came down on homes across the county. Chipley ran shelters and distribution points for weeks after the storm. Some homes had roofs replaced but the insulation underneath was never addressed. If your home was repaired post-Michael but the attic was never scoped, it is worth a free estimate. We handle removal, disposal, and reinstall as a single job. More on storm damage removal here.
Flood-Prone Properties
Parts of Chipley have recurring flood issues, and FEMA recently funded a $1.9 million project to acquire and demolish 20 repetitively flooded residential properties in Washington County. If your home sits in a flood-prone area and has taken water, the insulation in crawlspaces and lower wall cavities may be compromised. Water-damaged insulation loses R-value and can harbor mold. We can assess, remove, and replace it.
R-Values for Chipley Homes
Same Climate Zone 2 as the coast. We recommend R-38 to R-49 in attics for most Chipley homes. Walls run R-13 to R-21 depending on framing. More on attic R-value here.
